"I'm just a storyteller, and the cinema happens to be my medium. I like it because it recreates life in movement, enlarges it, enhances it, distills it. For me, it's far closer to the miraculous creation of life than, say, a painting or music or even literature. It's not just an art form; it's actually a new form of life, with its own rhythms, cadences, perspectives and transparencies. It's my way of telling a story."

"You start with an idea in your head, and you take a step, then a second. Soon, you realize you are up to your neck with something intense. But that doesn't matter. You keep at it for the sheer pleasure of it, for the pure satisfaction it might bring you, and that, my dear, can't be measured by miles."

"I'm supposed to act like they aren't here. Assuming there's a "they" at all. It may just be my imagination. Whatever it is that's watching, it's not human, unlike little dark eyed Donna. It doesn't ever blink. What does a scanner see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does it see into me, into us? Clearly or darkly? I hope it sees clearly, because I can't any longer see into myself. I see only murk. I hope for everyone's sake the scanners do better. Because if the scanner sees only darkly, the way I do, then I'm cursed and cursed again. I'll only wind up dead this way, knowing very little, and getting that little fragment wrong too."

"There's so much misery, laxity and indifference, in body and in mind. In the end you don't believe in anything, you think that's how it is, that's the whole meaning."
"Cellos and basses should sing like blazes. It is a question of joy, you see. Not a joy that expresses itself in laughter, or a joy that says I am happy. What I mean is a joy that is so great, so particular, that it lies beyond pain and boundless despair. It is a joy beyond all understandings. It's .. well .. I can't explain it any better."
